CENELEC EN 50625: Updates on depollution and sampling

CENELEC standards have been revised with new technical requirements for WEEE depollution. Sampling methods for plastic and metal fractions have been improved.

The CENELEC EN 50625 series of standards constitutes the backbone of the technical requirements for WEEE collection and treatment in Europe. The latest revisions bring important clarifications and additional requirements that directly affect treatment operator operations.

What EN 50625 Covers

The EN 50625 standard establishes precise obligations regarding the removal of hazardous components from WEEE. The targeted components include:

  • Batteries of all types (including Li-ion)
  • PCB capacitors
  • Mercury-containing components (lamps, relays)
  • Asbestos and fibre cement
  • Toners and cartridges
  • Printed circuit boards (over 10 cm²)
  • PVC cables
  • CFC/HCFC gases from cooling equipment

New Developments in Sampling Methodology

TS 50625-3-1: Output Fractions

The technical specification now describes more detailed methods for the collection and testing of fractions resulting from treatment. Contamination levels are tested for:

  • Plastics: presence of brominated flame retardants
  • Ferrous metal: contamination with non-ferrous metals and impurities
  • Glass: lead content and other heavy metals
  • Dust/residues: hazardous substance concentration

The 5-Step Sampling Procedure

The new standardised procedure involves:

  • Identification of the batch and the fraction to be tested
  • Collection of representative samples according to the protocol
  • Sample preparation for analysis
  • Accredited laboratory analysis
  • Interpretation of results and corrective actions

Impact on Treatment Operators in Romania

Compliance with EN 50625 is no longer optional for treatment operators who wish to work with major PROs or who are pursuing WEEELABEX certification. The necessary investments include adequate depollution equipment, staff training, and implementation of a quality management system focused on these requirements.

CENELEC standards are not just rules on paper – they are the instrument through which the recycling industry proves that it protects the environment and worker health in a real and measurable way.
